The interior of the Cathedral of Messina, Sicily, Italy: Norman splendor recreated. Stepping into the Cathedral of Messina (Duomo di Messina) places the visitor within one of Sicily’s most fascinating sacred spaces. Although the structure was almost completely destroyed by the 1908 earthquake and the 1943 air raids, its interior once again shines with historic grandeur. The 92-meter-long nave of this three-aisled basilica is supported by two rows of thirteen monumental columns each, topped with Corinthian capitals. A glance upward reveals the undisputed highlight: an open timber ceiling, faithfully reconstructed and richly painted with colorful Arab-Norman style patterns. Twelve monumental marble statues of the Apostles line the side aisles. The long central aisle leads directly to the three apses. While the central apse is dominated by a monumental golden mosaic of Christ Pantocrator, the right-hand apse holds a true treasure: its mosaics are original works from the 14th century that survived the destruction. #churcharchitecture #catholicchurch #sacredspaces #visitsicily #creatorsearchinsights
