The Tiger II—most commonly known as the King Tiger (or Königstiger in German) and officially designated as Sd.Kfz. 182—was the heaviest and most powerful mass-produced German tank of World War II. Developed by the engineering firm Henschel, it entered production in early 1944 and served until the end of the war in May 1945.It combined the extremely thick armor of the original Tiger I with the highly effective sloped armor design pioneered by the Panther tank. While a technological marvel on paper, it was heavily crippled by the collapsing economic and logistical realities of late-war Germany.Key Technical SpecificationsWeight: Nearly 70 tons (ranging from 68.5 to 69.8 metric tons depending on the turret).Main Gun: The 8.8 cm KwK 43 L/71. This exceptionally long-barreled cannon was incredibly accurate and could frontally penetrate almost any Allied tank at distances well over 2,500 meters.Armor: Up to 185 mm on the turret front and 150 mm of sloped steel on the front hull. There are no definitive wartime records of its frontal armor ever being penetrated in combat.Engine: A Maybach HL 230 V12 gasoline engine delivering 700 horsepower. Notably, this was the exact same engine used in the Panther tank, which weighed 25 tons less.Crew: 5 men (Commander, Gunner, Loader, Driver, Radio Operator).Battlefield StrengthsWhen deployed defensively or in long-range engagements, the Tiger II was a terrifying opponent. Because its front armor was virtually impenetrable to contemporary Allied tanks, American, British, and Soviet tank crews were forced to rely on flanking maneuvers. They had to maneuver around the sides or rear of the vehicle to target its significantly thinner side armor.Strategic Flaws and WeaknessesDespite its tactical supremacy in one-on-one duels, historians generally view the Tiger II as a tactical success but a strategic failure due to several crippling flaws:Mechanical Breakdown: The engine, transmission, and final drives were under immense strain from the vehicle's 70-ton weight. Mechanical breakdowns were frequent, and steering components regularly failed.Logistical Nightmare: The tank consumed fuel at an astronomical rate—roughly 500 liters per 100 kilometers (around 0.5 miles per gallon) on roads, and significantly more off-road. Because Germany faced severe fuel shortages, many Tiger IIs were abandoned and blown up by their own crews simply because they ran out of gas.Mobility Restrictions: The tank was too heavy for most European bridges, forcing it to look for fording points. Transporting it by train required removing its massive combat tracks and fitting narrow "transport tracks" so it could fit on standard rail cars.Low Production Numbers: Heavy Allied bombing of the Henschel factories in Kassel limited production. Only 492 units were ever built, compared to tens of thousands of American M4 Shermans and Soviet T-34s.The Two Turret VariantsIn historical records and military simulators (like World of Tanks or War Thunder), you will often see references to two different turrets:The Early Turret (often misnamed the "Porsche Turret"): The first 50 Tiger IIs used a Krupp-designed turret featuring curved front armor. This curve created a dangerous "shot trap," where incoming enemy shells could bounce downward directly into the thin roof armor of the driver's compartment. The Production Turret (often called the "Henschel Turret"): All subsequent models used a redesigned Krupp turret with a flat, massive front face. This design was much easier to manufacture and eliminated the dangerous shot trap.Today, only a handful of original King Tigers survive in museums worldwide, including a fully operational one at the Musée des Blindés in Saumur, France, and two at The Tank Museum in Bovington, UK.Would you like to explore a specific aspect of the Tiger II? I can look up detailed information on:Its combat history in specific engagements, such as the Normandy Campaign or the Battle of the Bulge.#tank #ww2 #military #war
