40 notches on outside edge. Placed on the ground appropriately, this could be used with shadows as a base10 clock. Or, used with another piece as a sextant. Another idea: one curve could represent a comet that was visible day and night; it's path was tracked telative to the Pliedes. Just my thoughts. having never seen this before.
