The way I see it: Treating myself as autistic, managing my life as if I'm autistic, has improved my quality of life. That's all that should really matter.

I feel judged when I mention to someone that I have autism and they immediately ask “Were you tested?” (I’m self-realized and confirmed as meeting the criteria by my counselor and my NP) How do I answer this without sounding defensive?

If you are thinking of emigrating to another country, taking care of yourself and not getting a diagnosis might help since several countries will not accept immigrants with autism even if they already have a job lined up and are well off.

My personal crazy opinion, I would rather people self diagnose than get a professional diagnosis too young.

I'm afraid to get a diagnosis, because I have a problem with telling the truth about myself and my thoughts. I tend to adapt my answer to give an appropriate answer that a professional would want to hear. I know it's wrong, but it's a part of my armor.

I genuinely believe I'm autistic but I can't afford the bill for a professional to tell me that.

If I remember correctly, my professors taught me that psychology struggled with being taken seriously because people, back in the day, called it a pseudo-science due to the lack of certainty. The field doesn't have any concrete laws like how Physics has Newton's laws. Instead, it has concepts, theories, and so on.

How would one go about managing Suspected ADHD, Autism and CPTSD? . I often struggle to identify what's CPTSD vs what's the other two and how to balance them CPTSD tools help me, ADHD tools help me, autism tools help too — but I'm not sure how to balance these all until I can see a professional

I’ve spent my life struggling with the hallmarks of autism, knowing I was different, always being on the outside of society looking in, seemingly unable to function the way my peers do in every regard no matter how hard I try. This past year I finally had a chance to ask my mom what all the testing I went through as a kid was about because no one ever told me and after 7th grade they stopped. They were testing me to determine whether I was Autistic or not. According to my mom, despite her lying to them to try and make things sound less severe, they STILL diagnosed me as autistic. And then my mom hid it from everyone, never told a soul, not even me. Now I’m 34 (turning 35 tomorrow). I had finally built a life where I had a partner, had started a career as a software engineer, and 3 years in burnt out so hard I fell to alcoholism to cope with my symptoms and lost everything. (I’m 2 years clean now though!) Now my cats and I are living in a precarious situation with family who are going to lose their home at an undetermined point in time, I’m still horribly burnt out and functioning worse than before I knew, I still can’t find work let alone work that pays enough for an apartment, and nowhere else to go when this roof gets taken away. I feel I need a diagnosis so I can get the support I need to sort out my head, figure this thing out, get work, and save my life and keep my cats with me, but I have no resources. Is there even any hope? Sorry for being so long winded, I can’t seem to help that either

I call myself "peer reviewed" autistic. I had a friend about 5 years ago say they thought I might be autistic, and I went 'hahaha nah', and I told my therapist about it in my next session, because I thought it was so ridiculous, and my therapist responded "I thought you knew". I have since had many people in my life, some of who have known for my over 15 years, say they also thought I knew. So after a couple of years of working to accept it, I went 'ya, okay, it would explain a LOT'.

As a woman, I trust my self diagnosis more than I’d ever trust a drs. Being misdiagnosed destroyed my life and I will never trust one again

it's hard to get a diagnosis in my country, whether it's concerning neurodivergence or psychological disorders. do you know - or anyone else for that matter - whether there is any way of getting evaluated online?

i did the raads test online and done lots of research, yet i hate to self diagnose because i feel as if i need absolute thruth and certainty so in going to try and get a professional assessment done too, thats how i see a self diagnose working :>

And you can go for official assessment and get poor or wrong diagnoses. The number of times as a SpEd teacher that I read them and say, "Go back and tell them this thing that they forgot to evaluate for."

I believe everyone knows their mind and body better than anyone else (in majority of cases anyway) and although I'm almost absolutely certain I am autistic (possible adhd as well) I'm still trying to get courage enough to contact a doctor and get the process going to be even more sure. For now, I just tell people that I need extra care and patience than most and that's okay.

where i live now no one diagnoses me correctly they only say I have anxiety when I'm sure I have audhd so I treat myself as if I have autism because it makes my life easier and it's the only thing that makes sense

I initially self diagnosed but cos I was never fully confident I went for an assessment and was officially diagnosed - even with a diagnosis I still question myself when I see an autistic experience that I don’t personally experience

I say I’m suspected AuADHD personally. Nothing ever made sense until I realised how many traits I express and learning about those traits is the ONLY thing that’s helped me manage them. I’m physically and mentally crippled, unable to work and living off disability payments that barely cover rent let alone groceries for the month so forking up $4000-$5000 per test for both autism and adhd isn’t gonna happen anytime soon. If anyone who shames self diagnosis wants to pay for all my tests then I’m glad to accept and I’m pretty certain I’ll have a proper diagnosis afterwards 🤷‍♀️
