As a licensed cosmetologist, I would absolutely consider a gloss if your hair is 100% natural and you’re just wanting to enhance your red. ❤️A true gloss is one of the gentlest ways to play with your natural color. It deposits tone rather than permanently changing the underlying pigment of your hair. Depending on the product, there may be a very minimal amount of cuticle swelling, but it does not work like permanent color, which uses stronger chemistry to open the cuticle and alter the natural pigment inside the hair.
And yes, a gloss does deposit/stain the hair temporarily, which is exactly why you get that beautiful boost of richness and shine. But on virgin hair, that deposit is designed to gradually fade with washing rather than permanently changing your natural color.
For red hair especially, I LOVE a gloss. 🍒 It can make your natural red look richer, brighter, shinier, and more dimensional without committing you to permanent color.
The biggest thing I would recommend is choosing the right shade and formulation for your specific natural red. Some reds can pull too copper, too violet, or too dark depending on the underlying tone. And always do a strand test first, because “temporary” does not necessarily mean “zero chance of lingering pigment,” particularly on porous hair.
But if your goal is simply “I love my natural red and want to make it look even prettier”, a gloss is one of the first things I would recommend. ✨
