I’m from N Ireland and have a different take on this. When we voted in the referendum in 1998, for the Good Friday Peace Agreement, there was a lot of issues that weren’t palatable, ie the early release of prisoners ( this was a big issue for many people). But, and it’s a huge but, we the citizens of Ireland were war weary and desperate for peace and an end to violence. So we set aside our differences for the bigger goal of Peace. It’s almost 30 years since that vote and my daughter has grown into adulthood without the fears that were such a part of my everyday life during the Troubles. There’s many people here who still hold positions of authority that I wish they didn’t but I also see the bigger picture and understand that change takes time and consistency and fairness to ALL sides, whether I like it or not.
