hi brandon! would love to get your opinion on my essay topic because i’m scared it’s too basic/broad. to sum it up, im writing about my grandmother with alzheimer’s. my hook is about the first time she didn’t recognize me and how the caregiver role i viewed in her seemed to inevitably fall upon me. growing up, i watched her put my family above herself and was always selfless. now, i realize it’s my turn to be selfless and make her my first priority. once she moved in with me and lost her abilities to speak, i learned a different way of communication, learned how to be her voice, and how to care for her.

What about an essay where you talk about Legos and how some of the bricks represent hardships that you were just born with (very brief), but then for the rest of the essay you talk about how you built on top of those bricks (via extracurriculars and experiences) to grow your Lego structure (aka you as a person). The idea is supposed to be about recognizing hardships but embracing them and using them to fuel growth rather than remaining stagnant. Idk if this works

I wanted to write about how I’ve felt like an alien my whole life while dealing with autism and struggling to interact with others, but found comfort in the lab I work in that focuses on zebrafish skeletal development. the fact that their appearances are so distinctly different from humans but still share 70% their genes helped me realize that just because I may act differently than those around me, I’m still human and can help others just like how the zebrafish do through acting as vertebrate models. Do you think that this would be easy to follow or should I focus just on highlighting my research rather than my alienation? 🤔

@Jules: hi brandon I am writing about a game bananagrams that i played an absurd amount of this summer - I noticed that a lot of times when playing at the start I deemed letters like q and x and z as hard letters because it is hard to think of words with those letters in the spot especially with a specific set of letters u can use. also at the same time i was a camp counselor (bananagrams filled in literally any spare time i had during this experience because i slept at camp but was counselor for day camp) and the oldest group of kids everyone deemed as difficult and too independent, but I was like the only one that requested the older ones because I knew that deep down they would be awesome (which they truly were i bonded with them an insane amount). I found parallels and now I don’t look at the q’s, the z’s, and the x’s as quite so hard because i found some really good words to work with, and at the end of the day I can rearrange them all i want. What do you think of that concept, any advice and do or donts for it?
