This is brilliant! 1. You’re always teaching me so much! 2. This is probably how people responded to the idea of a degree in agriculture or any other science before the Bachelors of Science was a thing 3. Why are people so obsessed with making things sound inferior?

I’d love if they actually had a major for social media influencing. We should call it “Rhetoric”

You can do this with anything. “Oh, your college is introducing a ‘game design’ program? Is your homework just playing video games?”

first of all let me just say I love how excited you got for this one. I like seeing people that I like get excited about things that they like. 🥰 secondly I have been very familiar with this effect as a journalist and have absolutely used it to generate page views even though I knew it was kind of shady. (hey i was under deadlines and pv goals) to me this also sounds like a very useful degree in our modern world as well as potentially a great vector for teaching young people how to avoid being manipulated by mis- and disinformation online, while also making them more responsible social media users

Oh! I actually have a weird intersection of knowledge on this too! My degrees are in communication and HR. I do employer branding and recruitment. I was a blogger and social media influencer for 5 years. When I stopped and went back to applying for salaried jobs, I reframed my skills on my resume. I didn’t use the term “influencer.” I used “content creation” and “marketing.” And I did this because of my HR recruiting knowledge. I knew HR managers didn’t have the marketing knowledge that I have so I reframed it in their language. Thank you, communication degree. 😂

My alma mater went semi-viral in a similar fashion due to a "class" they offered. I use air quotes because it wasn't a normal class and was instead a 2-3 week ordeal meant to be a fun break from the usual stress of normal college. Only worth like 1 miscellaneous credit and was free for full time students. But oh boy, a certain crowd online lost their minds over it.

It probably sounds off just due to the fact that "influencer" and "content-creator" sound like a hyper specific occupation type and isn't a good descriptor of the nature of the course, so it's similar to "a degree in being an office worker" or "major in news casting", however, a part of the content-creating community learning in-depth things about journalism could potentially lead to return of a more structured and stylised way of conveying the set points of content rather than the organic on-the-spot way of filming that grew recently.

the irony of social media influencers mocking the idea of an "influencer" degree (real or not) is delicious and shows an insane lack of self-awareness

Education: “So basically you got a degree in telling kids what to do.” Accounting: “Imagine paying tuition to learn how to use a calculator.” Architecture: “You got a degree in drawing houses.” Photography: “They’re giving out degrees in taking pictures now?” Music: “You went to college to play songs?” Creative Writing: “A bachelor’s degree in making up stories? Seriously?” Communications: “You needed four years of college to learn how to talk to people?”
