it's not a "mistake" though. if he took out the money without telling her, it's theft.

Right when you started the video, I knew he did something to make it that way.

If I was in her shoes I would opt to have separate savings accounts. If anything requires a joint contribution then they each pay half. He doesn’t want to be “treated like a child” and she doesn’t want her hard earned money being used behind her back.

I had to do this with my ex because he would take it out for alcohol and drugs.

the solution to that problem should have been a divorce. he violated her trust hugely and there is no coming back from that. so now he's either going to be living under her thumb because she can't trust him or they need to divorce and maybe he'll do better in his next relationship. I certainly hope he learned something.

I have one joint account with my husband every else is in my name account. he has been very bad with money. to the point we almost became homeless because he refused to help and I was very sick. and spent all the money on fun things. now I have to control the money so everything can get paid. but I give him money but after bills, food, and gas. I feel bad but at the same time I wont let someone I love put me in the spot again.

She's not even really withholding the money. He was able to have the money, just not access to the account. But I think a better alternative to this would be to have separate savings accounts from now on, the husband should take the entire loss from the decision he made (if that's even possible), split the rest equally and move forward from there. Husband or not, I wouldn't be willing to lose what was probably 10s of thousands for something I didn't agree to and that he knew full well I'd never agree to. It's unreasonable to expect to be trusted again after that.

If its a joint account you can have your own access, its not the one login.. but after what he did I would keep anything in joint, seperate accounts!

Maybe it’s just a different perspective but it’s not just the loss of money that would be the issue but that he didn’t discuss using their savings and just did it with no respect

I’m a big supporter of separate bank accounts and if needed create a joint account for the direct expenses of the house electric bill, mortgage, etc

After a betrayal like that I’d say post nup and separate accounts until trust is rebuilt.

She didn’t say no, but by her having the only password means that she also will get to be aware of when the $$ leave. He also has an option to open his own savings account. But she learned that he was willing to take $$ and hide it, so she learned to protect their joint savings.

From the jump, I was like either he’s bad with money or he did something bad with it. It’s super rare for a woman who handles the family finances to do something crazy

As someone whose ex husband constantly cosigned for others, I would have done the same as the wife in this situation.

And this is why you never share a bank account with ANYONE. Not your family, not your friends, not your partners. Keep your money separate and anyone who pressures you to make a decision about your money is 🚩
