I think private lessons play a role too, most travel ball kids also have private coaches for their positions. We have my son in catching lessons and we’re thinking about pitching lessons. It’s not as expensive as people think though we pay 70 dollars a lesson and he goes once a week, we pay 40 dollars a month for the dues for travel ball, and they split tournaments fees evenly between the 12 kids that go to that tournament.

The thing that I hate about travel bald is they want you to travel a few hundred miles to play a team that is two towns over from you, where you're at, or where you live. Like, that makes no sense at all

I'm down for travel if the kid wants it but there are so many psychotic parents in travel ball that it's uncomfortable. what bums me out is rec sports has taken such a huge hit. some kids just wanna play and have fun.

Find Comfort in Chaos | Hello! :
In our area the kids who play for high school are primarily only travel ballers. If you don’t play travel ball, good luck making the high school team!

I wouldn’t even say travel ball is broken or bad. You need travel ball to exist to open the doors for showcases and all star games in many other states. Without travel ball, scouts would be forced to see hs games and you are stuck playing lower tier comp in your area until districts or regionals in HS.

A friend of mine states that paying for travel ball is just paying for college upfront. His daughter did it for years and ended up with a D1 scholarship however, he swears the amount of money he paid for it was equal to her college education. Consider, considering all the travel expenses.

The answer is yes. If your kid is not the best kid on their rec team then no travel ball. If they are in hs or ms and do not pitch or play shortstop/cf then no travel ball.

My boys played travel ball and never played past HS. Neither had aspirations of playing in the MLB. They were wise enough to know they wouldn’t go that far. But in our area in TX, it’s hard to make the HS team if you don’t play travel ball. The coaches all talk and predetermine things IMO. However, my boys loved playing and we had fun watching them do what they loved. We were blessed enough to be able to afford it. It taught them some valuable life lessons.

You wanna know why we are so behind countries like the DR cause we focus so much on playing games where as those countries focus on skill building and don’t play many games at all

If you don’t go to MLB it’s not worth it. Most of the scholarship are for CC or JUCO hundreds a weekend or thousands for 2-4 years the choice invest the money instead

Ive got a cousin who was an assistant at D1 and d2 level and current manager of a D2 school. He hates travel ball with a passion, even though when he was an assistant he would manage some of these summer teams.

Play travel ball because your kid wants to play at that level and frequency. You aren’t going to make the highschool team or at least play in HS without playing travel ball - at least in north Texas. Playing travel ball solely to get a college scholarship is nonsensical. Save the money - there’s the scholarship.

Agreed, had one dude from HS went to play for UT college for basketball and one went to the dogers for mlb. It’s extremely rare to see someone go. We were distantly related to both.
