Human Rights Watch reported in February 2026 that the version of the Code approved by parliament in August 2025 allows marriage at "puberty," which could potentially mean an age as young as 9 or 10. Save Iraqi women. We need help. We are facing severe oppression in our country. On behalf of all the women of my country, I call for my voice to reach the entire world. A law known as the “Ja‘fari Code” has been enacted in Iraq, and this law has no connection to humanity, justice, or equality among members of society. Under this law, women are deprived of their rights and forced to submit to this injustice. When an Iraqi woman enters into marriage and later discovers that she is not with the right person, she resorts to divorce, which is one of her most basic rights. Yet in my country, that woman is oppressed simply for refusing humiliation and choosing separation. She can be denied financial support, her children are taken from her once they reach the age of seven, custody goes directly to the father, and she is prevented from raising her own children. Under this law, a husband is allowed to kill his wife under the pretext of “cleansing honor” and can receive a maximum sentence of only three years in prison, after which he is released and continues his life. Furthermore, a husband who married before this law has the right to change the legal basis of his marriage contract to the “Ja‘fari Code” without his wife’s knowledge or consent. Help us. We are suffering from oppression in our society. Save the women of Iraq from injustice.

Infants are forcibly taken from their mothers upon divorce, and we are powerless to do anything about it. Many women take to the streets in peaceful demonstrations demanding their children, but instead of returning the children to their mothers, men use images of women's faces to create pornographic videos that humiliate and degrade them. Numerous videos have circulated showing fathers beating and restraining their children and threatening the mothers for money. Please help us. No woman is truly free until all women are free.
