Chris Fagan wants to go out on a high, and that tells you everything you need to know about him. It was never about Brisbane. It was never about the team, the club, or the next generation of players coming through. It was about self-achievement. A real coach doesn't time his exit to protect his own legacy. A real coach stays and tries to win more. He stays when it's hard. He builds the next flag, he takes the hits, he backs his players when the list is in transition and the wins are harder to find. Or, when he tries and can no longer do it, he does the honourable thing - he retires gracefully or he accepts that he gets sacked when his performance dips. That's how coaching works. You don't get to cherry-pick the perfect fairytale ending just to make yourself look good. Fagan choosing to walk now, at the top, is selfish. It leaves Brisbane to clean up the aftermath while he gets the headlines, the tributes, the statue treatment. It's about protecting Brand Fagan, not about what is best for the Lions. Great coaches put the team first until the last day. Selfish ones put themselves first and call it timing.
