Do rich people still have all of that nowadays or something similar? And when did all of that get consolidated into just a living room? Everywhere I’ve been have had a living room, kitchen, dinning, bathrooms, bedrooms. There was this one room though that we had in the house when I was ages 6-12 that was rarely used. It was at the front of the house. I’m not sure it’s original purpose but it stayed ridiculously too hot and was just used for storage. It was used as part of a yard sale area when we were moving out too. The back door was used for entry and exit.

It does make sense, now we call it a living room (formal, untouched) and a family room. And the men go to the “man cave” aka garage haha

Parlours aren’t common in England, you’d usually have a sitting room and a drawing room in the ground floor (first to Americans) apart from very old Tudor/jacobean/elizabethan houses would have a great hall on the ground floor and a drawing room in the first floor but later all reception rooms would be on the ground floor depending on the size of the house

So like the rec room, the formal living room all grandmother's wouldn't allow children to walk on the carpet in and then the actual living room? So cool! I kind of knew what a parlor was, but not the definition of a drawing room. ❤️❤️❤️

My gparents 1905 American Four Square originally had three parlors, two formal with separate entrance doors one for the husband, one for the wife and then the back for family.

And now we have the “good front room” and the “family room”. We technically my bedroom was the front parlor through high school because it was a broken up Victorian home.
