He cited gold and coffee as examples, noting that raw exports generate far less revenue than processed products. According to Museveni, a kilogram of gold sold in raw form may fetch about $60,000, while the same quantity processed to 99% purity can reach approximately $173,000. He similarly pointed to coffee, explaining that while a kilogram of husked coffee may earn about $2, roasting, grinding and packaging can raise its value to around $40. Museveni said the same challenge affects cotton and other minerals, arguing that Africa must strengthen value addition and industrial processing if it is to retain more wealth from its natural resources. “The consequence is seen,” #Museveni said, linking Africa’s limited industrialization to the continued export of raw materials.
