For those who wanna know and understand why she was taken to the hospital: The state could not legally or medically just "let her die" because an execution must follow strict rules, and once those rules failed, keeping her alive became a legal requirement. An execution is only legal during a specific timeframe set by a judge's warrant. For Christa Pike, that warrant expired at midnight. Because of hours of legal delays, the execution didn't start until late in the evening. When the two doses of drugs failed to work and the clock neared midnight, the state no longer had the legal authority to continue trying to kill her. The U.S. Constitution forbids torture or inflicting "cruel and unusual punishment." An execution is supposed to be quick and painless. Because the chemicals failed to stop her heart but were causing her intense physical agony—making her choke and suffocate on fluid in her lungs—continuing the procedure or letting her slowly suffer to death would violate constitutional law. The State's Legal Duty to Provide Care When the state takes a person into custody, it is legally responsible for their safety. The moment the prison officials officially halted the execution, Pike went from being an active subject of an execution back to being an inmate under the state's care. At that exact moment, the prison had a legal and ethical obligation to provide emergency medical treatment.
