To everyone who has a voice that can be heard, and to everyone who has the power to do something for women in Iraq and help create change: please, let my voice reach women’s rights organizations.
Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence should revolve around a husband and a child — that your worth depends on how well you please them, how quietly you endure, and how much of yourself you are willing to sacrifice.
And then, even the child you devoted your life to can be taken away from you.
In my country, women have been given so little space to exist as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and caregivers before we are allowed to be individuals with dreams, choices, voices, and lives of our own.
And now, even motherhood itself can be taken from us.
How much more are women expected to lose before the world listens?
Please hear our voices. Please help us be seen. And please do not let Iraqi women continue to disappear behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never built to protect them.
