this is based on a real ancient engineering achievement, although the image itself explicitly says it is AI-generated. It depicts the Tunnel of Eupalinos on the Greek island of Samos. Around the mid-6th century BC (roughly 540 BC), the Greek engineer Eupalinos directed construction of an underground aqueduct through Mount Kastro. The main tunnel is about 1,036 meters (3,400 feet) long. The crazy part: they really did dig from both sides Instead of starting at one end and tunneling all the way through, Eupalinos had two crews begin on opposite sides of the mountain. They had no GPS, lasers, modern surveying instruments or ability to see one another. They had to establish the entrances’ elevations and directions from measurements made outside and around the mountain, then transfer those directions underground. Modern measurements confirm that the initial direction and slope were remarkably accurate. And Eupalinos didn’t simply hope the tunnels would intersect. He appears to have incorporated a clever error-correction strategy. As the crews approached the predicted meeting area, the tunnels were deliberately redirected. Horizontally, this created a larger “catching” area so that a small surveying error wouldn’t allow the crews to unknowingly pass alongside one another. Vertically, the tunnel was enlarged near the junction for essentially the same reason. How close did they actually get? This is where your picture needs a little qualification. You’ll see different numbers depending upon exactly what researchers measure. One reconstruction reports a horizontal error of about 0.7 m (2.3 ft) and a vertical error of only 0.04 m (1.6 inches) at the meeting point. A modern digital survey published in the Journal of Architecture and Planning, however, reports a 64-cm (about 25-inch) difference in height between the two tunnel sections where they meet. So the viral graphic’s “about 2 feet apart in height” isn’t an unreasonable simplification, but there’s more nuance to how the tunnel’s accuracy is measured. And they carved this by hand We’re talking about workers cutting through hard limestone with hammers and chisels, illuminating the tunnel with oil lamps. Estimates put construction at roughly 8–10 years, although other estimates extend higher. #geometry #math #Science #tunnel #greece
