@bugis.ugi: Why Do Japanese Houses Use Clay Walls? 🏯 #Japan #Tsuchikabe #Architecture Why do some traditional Japanese houses use clay walls instead of cement? This technique is called tsuchikabe, a traditional construction method that has been used in Japan for centuries. The process begins by creating a framework made from woven bamboo. This framework acts like the building’s skeleton and provides some flexibility when the structure moves. The clay is then mixed with sand and pieces of straw. The mixture can be left to rest for some time before being applied gradually to the bamboo framework. After several layers are added, the wall is finished with a final coating, such as plaster or lime. Interestingly, these earthen walls can also help regulate humidity. When the air is too humid, the wall can absorb some of the moisture and release it again when the air becomes drier. By using bamboo, soil, sand, and straw, this simple technique has become an important part of traditional Japanese architecture.
