@acacia.rosee: PAUSE TO READ 🖤❤️ I’m sorry I haven’t posted a Māori history video in so long. All the negativity on different platforms was hard to stomach. But after some thought, I realise I shouldn’t let that silence me. As I continue to learn more about the culture I will share it with you all 🤍#maori #aotearoa #newzealand #maoritiktok

(non Maori here) I've heard that before from people. its pure nonsense, in many respects Maori society was significantly more advanced than European society, certainly more intricate and balanced. Many early European settlers famously argued in acknowledgement of this with the Crown and early nz judiciary as its actions sought to impose 'mere barbarians' mindset in support of land thefts perpetrated by the Crown

Part 2 … There is another fascinating connection. “Savage” and “sylvan” are distant linguistic relatives. Sylvan—“of the woods”—comes from Latin silva. So the apparently gentle poetic word sylvan and the historically violent colonial word savage ultimately lead us back toward the same Latin forest. That becomes particularly significant in a colonial context. By the early-modern imperial period, “savage” was no longer merely describing somebody living outside cultivated European landscapes. European writers increasingly used it as a category within a supposed hierarchy of civilisation. Indigenous peoples could therefore be described as “savages” precisely because European thought conflated cultivation of land, Christianity, settled agriculture, private property, and European social organisation with “civilisation.” So there is a remarkable conceptual journey buried inside one word: forest → wild → uncultivated → uncivilised → primitive → brutal The later meanings are cultural constructions layered onto an older geographical/ecological meaning. And that makes savage particularly interesting alongside the Doctrine of Discovery and colonisation in Aotearoa. Europeans could encounter whenua that was intensively known, named, harvested, cultivated and governed according to tikanga, yet describe both whenua and tangata as “wild” because they did not conform to European categories of cultivation and sovereignty. In other words, “savage” contains a small linguistic history of the European transformation of difference into inferiority.

I don’t think the culture is a monolith and engaging the racists at their level (no academic rigour) is allowing the overton window to shift so deep down into the mud it’s not helping anyone.
