I heard the front door handle move. At first, I thought it was the wind. Then I heard the lock click. I muted the TV. Someone slowly opened the front door. I froze. I grabbed my phone and quietly walked toward the stairs. Then I heard footsteps. Someone was inside my house. I ran upstairs and hid in my closet. I called my mom. No answer. I called my dad. I whispered that my family was away on vacation. There was a long pause. Then the operator asked, “Your family is away?” “Yes.” She sounded confused. “How many people are supposed to be in the house with you?” I told her nobody. She said, “Then why did someone call us from inside your house ten minutes ago?” My blood went cold. I checked my phone. There was no call history. Then I heard footsteps again. But this time they were coming from downstairs. The police arrived a few minutes later. They searched the entire house. No one was there. The front door was still locked. The windows were locked too. They told me maybe someone had gotten inside and escaped before they arrived. I didn’t believe them. Then one officer came upstairs holding my phone. He asked me where I had been hiding. I pointed at the closet. He looked inside. Then he showed me the screen. There was a recording saved on my phone. It had been recorded while I was hiding. I pressed play. For the first few seconds, there was only silence. Then I heard myself breathing. Then footsteps entered the room. The man whispered, “I know you’re here.” Then there was another voice. My mom’s voice. She whispered, “Don’t come out.” I started crying. My mom was hundreds of miles away. Or at least I thought she was. The officer checked the house again. This time, they found something behind my bedroom door. A family photo. One that had been hanging downstairs. Someone had taken it off the wall and placed it there. I looked at the picture. My parents were standing beside me. But there was something wrong. My parents weren’t in the photo anymore. Neither was my brother. It was just me. Standing in the middle of the picture. And behind me… was the man from my room. I called my mom again. This time, she answered. Before I could say anything, she asked, “Are you alone?” I said yes. She went silent.
