Tunisia/Cathrage Punic Wars History Edit 🇹🇳⚔️ | Carthage was an ancient Phoenician city-state and empire located in present-day Tunisia. Founded in the 9th century BCE, Carthage grew into a dominant maritime power, controlling trade networks across the Western Mediterranean. Between 264 and 146 BCE, Carthage fought the Roman Republic in a series of three conflicts known as the Punic Wars. Originally established as a colony by Phoenician settlers from Tyre, Carthage developed an independent empire driven by extensive maritime commerce and naval dominance. By the 3rd century BCE, Carthaginian territory encompassed coastal North Africa, southern Iberia, Sardinia, Corsica, and western Sicily. Executive governance was held by elected magistrates called suffetes, alongside a Senate and the judicial Council of 104. Conflict with the expanding Roman Republic over control of Sicily initiated the First Punic War (264–241 BCE), resulting in Carthaginian defeat and the loss of its island territories. During the Second Punic War (218–201 BCE), General Hannibal Barca launched a overland campaign into Italy, crossing the Alps and inflicting severe military defeats on Roman forces at Cannae and Trebia before being defeated at the Battle of Zama. The Third Punic War (149–146 BCE) concluded with the Siege of Carthage by Roman forces under Scipio Aemilianus. The city was systematically destroyed, its surviving population enslaved, and the territory annexed as the Roman province of Africa. Today, the archaeological ruins of Carthage are located near modern Tunis and are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. #creatorsearchinsights #FYP #Tunisia #History #FY
