@johnamaechiobe: Professional firms have been cutting away at the base of their organisational triangle for years. Contraction, offshoring and automation have all reduced the junior work through which people once acquired judgement, context and capability. The immediate economics may look attractive. The longer-term consequence is fewer people being prepared for the senior work organisations will still need. Remove enough developmental rungs and you don’t create a leaner triangle - you create a flat-bottomed rhombus. And that is a far less stable organisation. #Leadership #OrganisationalDevelopment #FutureOfWork #TalentDevelopment #AIAndWork
In addition to this, my observation was that by offshoring and automating we had no talent selection pool, but added to that, less loyalty from those we had to go to the market to recruit from. I think starting on the ‘shop floor’ and being developed and promoted from within instills a kind of reciprocity. You stayed because the company had faith in you and gave you a chance. But that loyalty is not there when you go to the marketplace. So it costs more to recruit, for a higher turnover.

I think last sentence explains it all. No mid lvl manager is looking for a long term, not even a year, it’s this quarters results and fitting into the company narrative, so you would “survive” next wave of layoff.

I'm im construction and also work with ai 12 hours a day. it's near impossible to get an apprentice nowadays. and the issue is screen dependence.
the issue you're describing is there but is exacerbated but the younger generations cognitive indolence. it's almost like they cannot breathe without their phones.

Really good explanation, thank you. Despite your wise and insightful words I don’t see anything changing. It’s the same with the climate crisis. The evidence is all there but our society has its collective head in the sand about the risks we have been taking on AI, employment, climate etc in our pursuit of “growth” which is illusory and ultimately unsustainable on a resource limited planet. We seem determined to go to hell in a handcart.

No one will listen. Those bottom corners will also be replaced by automation and ai.

This going to cause social unrest and increase extreme politics. Governments need to start delivering policies for the young.

Really interesting. Also exacerbated by lack of oversight & support by working from home for all tiers. There's no cross pollination

"...juniors who never do the formative work, who offload cognitively and otherwise most of what's left to technology, and who know that the senior work that they used to anticipate is the very thing that their employers are working to automate next." - this is outstanding

You've got to eliminate short-termism and the idea that making cuts necessarily = increasing profit.
But let's face it, that's not going to happen.

Interesting. I like the concept. But it is more applicable to large organisations than small businesses, which are flatter, less hierarchical and more agile. Also where most people work. Perhaps we are looking at the creative destruction of large monopolies. Now that could be a positive outcome.

I see this in IT dev. We're using AI to generate code but today's generation of devs can spot the flaws. Will that always be true if we start to just uncritically rely on AI's output?

I’ve always thought the move to fast recruitment where nobody seems to work in a job for very long, contributed to this. In my industry the people who move around a lot are not as useful or valuable as those with proper knowledge and experience

The AI isn’t doing a good job, so firms relying on it will suffer. And I’m heartbroken for the people it will affect, except for the people that chose to implement AI-forward processes, without caring about the impact. They wanted to buy into the hype, because it suited their wallets.

Observation & repetition are so so key to development. This is such a great explanation - the flat bottom rhombus is such a short term strategy!

Super interesting, the image of the shape reminds me the shapes of a youthful versus aged population and the issues that come with it. I would love to see data on this for hiring, do you have any open resources?

It feels like such a daft strategy to replace all the basic and entry level tasks with AI. I don’t even think it’s cheaper - they’re just choosing to divert that spending to big tech via AI tokens rather than paying people.

I really don’t understand the forever growth ( profit & or turnover ) Whilst we are obviously in a downturn period companies get rid of experienced staff to help boost the “profitability” then 3yrs later need to re-hire. All the time making a yearly billion pound profit 😡

I see it as a diamond shape. A few subscriptions to ai supporting the top triangle. The very top has only one skill really. Customers. Without customers, all business dies.
