@dr_mikem: Pause for a second. This one matters. I keep coming back to a story in the news not because of the crime itself, but because of something underneath it. A group chat. So many boys in it. And how few of them said anything. It raises a question I can’t stop sitting with: what makes a good kid stay silent? Is it fear? Fear of not fitting in, of not being liked, of falling out of the group? And here’s the harder question for us as parents: are we so focused on raising boys who achieve, who get the grades, the spots at the elite schools, the wins, that we forget to raise boys who are kind? Who speak up? Who do the right thing when it costs them something? Character isn’t a byproduct of achievement. It’s built on purpose, in a million small moments when we praise kindness the way we praise a good report card. When we ask “were you kind today?” as often as “how did you do?” I definitely don’t have all the answers here. But I think it’s a conversation worth having. What do you think makes a kid brave enough to speak up? I’d really love to hear your thoughts below.

Catherine :
I worked with a pediatrician who educated his adolescent patients on dating/relationships/friendships as a part of their routine check-ups and I thought that was really wonderful. They respect doctors and it’s nice to hear it from people other than their own parents.

“Compliance and approval” this is the most useful thing I’ve heard from a man about men. Thank you. Because the compliance is about compliance to the father and later in compliance to other men. All 57 of those men will be fine after any punishment as long as they were silent. Because their frat brothers across the country will come to their aid and give them the jobs and the money they need.

These boys did respect when she said no, though which she did multiple times throughout those interactions…. We can acknowledge that some things you do in the bedroom don’t make you feel very good. They’re not for everyone. That’s the vast majority of people. It’s not only an issue for boys. It’s an issue for Girls as well cause you don’t have to do crazy things in order for a boy to like you and if you do, he doesn’t like you enough…
