Tony Williams — Miles Davis’ legendary Second Great Quintet will ALWAYS be my favorite collection of jazz musicians assembled in one group. Just look at this lineup! • Miles Davis — Trumpet (Bandleader) • Wayne Shorter — Tenor Saxophone • Herbie Hancock — Piano • Ron Carter — Bass • Tony Williams — Drums I mean, COME ON! 😂 And as a drummer, Tony Williams has always been one of the most fascinating musicians for me to watch and listen to. The fact that Tony was performing at such an extraordinary level at such a young age, alongside some of the most accomplished jazz musicians on the planet, is absolutely mind-blowing. My favorite recording of Tony with Miles is Four & More, recorded live in February 1964, shortly before Wayne Shorter joined the group. George Coleman was actually playing tenor saxophone on that recording. And here’s something that makes that album even MORE incredible. Tony Williams was only 18 YEARS OLD when they recorded it! EIGHTEEN! Think about that for a second. 😂 The musical maturity, confidence, creativity, and fearlessness in his playing were already extraordinary. Tony wasn’t simply keeping time behind Miles Davis. He was constantly interacting with the other musicians, challenging their ideas, creating tension, and pushing the music into unexpected directions. And that’s one of the things that made this group so special. These weren’t simply five incredible musicians playing together. They were five musicians having an ongoing musical conversation, sometimes seemingly finishing each other’s sentences. Now, back to this video! Here is Tony performing a drum solo at just 22 years old. The level of independence, coordination, improvisation, and sheer musical imagination on display is remarkable. Tony Williams was truly one of a kind, and his influence on modern drumming is almost impossible to overstate. What an absolute LEGEND. 🥁 #drums #drummer #drumsolo #milesdavis #jazzmusic
