DJ Berry, born Abdul Aziz Nsabimana, was a pioneering Rwandan-born disc jockey, radio presenter, musician, and dancer who emerged as one of the most vibrant, influential figures of Uganda’s early 1990s commercial FM radio revolution. Renowned for his extraordinary charisma, dapper style, smooth delivery, and deep connection with listeners, he bridged nightclub culture and commercial broadcasting, leaving an indelible mark on East African urban entertainment. Born in Rwanda, Berry launched his career in the late 1980s as a club DJ in Kigali's booming nightlife scene, regularly performing at popular spots like Cosmos Nightclub while also featuring on Radio Rwanda. Due to growing political instability and violence, he was forced into exile, first moving to Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he continued playing music. He subsequently moved to Europe, spending time in Germany where he refined his production skills and recorded *"Hey You"*, a conscious rap single warning young people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS. The track became a massive hit across both Rwandan and Ugandan airwaves, serving as one of the earliest hip-hop records in the region dedicated to social awareness. Returning to Africa around 1990, Berry settled in Kampala, where his flair behind the decks quickly made him a resident DJ at Tropicana Nightclub. In December 1993, when 91.3 Capital FM launched as Uganda's second private commercial FM station, Berry was recruited as one of its pioneer presenters alongside figures like Alex Ndawula. Hosting popular segments such as *Happy Hour*, *KT20*, and featuring as "Doctor Senga," he captivated the nation with his energetic live mixes, signature station IDs, promotional jingles, and smooth blend of zouk, R&B, dancehall, and love ballads. His voice became the flagship audio identity for Capital FM, making him a household favorite, especially among female listeners. Beyond radio broadcasting, Berry was a master entertainer and mentor. He became a staple host for major international concerts in Kampala, backing and curtain-raising for global superstars like Shaggy, Maxi Priest, Third World, and Chaka Demus & Pliers. He was deeply embedded in the early studio scene that birthed Peter Sematimba's Dungeon Studios and mentored aspiring disk jockeys, including DJ Rachael (Rachael Kungu), who credits him as one of her key instructors when she broke into the industry in 1995. Tragically, DJ Berry’s life and blossoming career were cut short when he passed away in 1996 from AIDS-related complications. His openness about his health battle and his early musical advocacy against the epidemic cemented his place in history. DJ Berry remains remembered as a true pioneer of modern East African club and radio culture whose style, voice, and showmanship helped set the standard for commercial broadcasting in Uganda.
