In 1979, Iggy Pop appeared on the Australian music programme Countdown for an interview that has become legendary for its chaotic energy. Dressed in a sharp suit but behaving anything but conventionally, the punk icon appeared visibly erratic and restless, giving host Ian “Molly” Meldrum an interview that felt more like an encounter with a live wire than a conventional television appearance. Iggy had a reputation for unpredictable behaviour and heavy drug use during this period, and the Countdown appearance has often been described by fans as a “coked-up” interview. While his exact state cannot be established simply from the footage, his restless movements, bizarre answers and manic energy certainly contributed to the reputation of the clip. It became an extraordinary piece of late-70s television, capturing Iggy's rebellious persona at a time when punk and alternative rock were challenging the conventions of mainstream music. The interview has since become a favourite among fans of Iggy Pop, The Stooges, punk rock, proto-punk and 1970s rock history. It also perfectly captures the unpredictable spirit of the era, when artists could appear on mainstream television and completely disregard the usual rules of celebrity interviews. For anyone interested in the stranger side of 70s music and rock culture, Iggy's Countdown appearance remains an unforgettable piece of television history. #iggypop #thestooges #punkrockmusic #classicrock #80smusic - @cory.carrme
