Poor mental health or a condition does not justify bad behaviour & treating people like dirt, ever....simple as that for me. I have suffered with mine for years but would NEVER treat anyone like that, never mind my own flesh & blood.

Not caring whether mental health issues were involved is the best place to be. When I first realised I was being abused I read book after book about ASPD, NPD, etc. and all I achieved was denial of what happened to me.

I am so proud of you Mel. You went through hell growing up. It’s your mum with the problem and she will never ever change and neither will your dad, your step dad and your brothers. Love you lots. X

My mum is definitely mentally unwell but I've also realised this year that her mental health is not my responsibility, no matter how much she tries to guilt trip me. She made her choices and she has to live with them.

The issue with these people is that they won’t ever seek professional help because they don’t believe they have anything “wrong” with them, effectively their own belief systems are skewed and they think the issue is everyone else. You literally will never get them to think the same way as you or get them to take accountability because they do not see the issue 🤦🏼♀️

As children of abusive parents we have to accept that sometimes we may never know why, and it’s just a fact of maybe they are just genuinely not good people. When you accept it you feel so much more free

My mother has trauma in her childhood for years I made excuses for her behaviour.
Now I have my own children I know there is no excuse and id never treat my children how she treated me.
Breaking that cycle x

My mum did have a traumatic upbringing but that does not excuse how she treated me and my sister growing up. I totally agree with how your therapist explained it because if we keep asking questions it pulls on our empathy and these people don’t deserve that. An explanation does not help the situation.

my comment certainly was not trying to excuse your mother's behaviour , I was genuinely curious because its not normal to treat your children & people around you like that. I couldnt care less what she has either, everyone in the comments saying im excusing the behaviour is just not true x

Wow, Melissa you are so strong. Just hearing how far you’ve come is so humbling and inspiring. You have the right mindset and the more you talk about this, the more it will help others with their own situations. Yes therapy helps, but you can just tell by how you speak you have really done a lot of work on this over the years to heal and move forward. You are amazing x

A therapist said to me once, I see people in therapy that are traumatised by the people who should be in therapy and never access it lol

Amen!!! a 'reason' per say doesn't negate what they actually did/said/how they made you feel. plenty of people with said mental health issues don't do x, y and z and be and evil person.

My mum is very much like yours sounds and she has been diagnosed with a few mental health issues but that doesn’t excuse the fact she’s treated me especially out of six of us the way she has! Leaving life long issues for me to deal with. It’s taken me until now at 42 to stop making excuses for her and letting others do the same too. She’s a horrible person end of story 🤷♀️mental health issues or not I don’t care

diagnosed but un-medicated :
my comment to people who say that is always the same. it does not matter what happened in their lives. when they have children, they are the ones who are meant to make sure their child never goes through the same. i feel when people try and label abusers as mentally ill or previous victims, its gives them excuses to why they behaved badly. it always feels like the abused is constantly having to justify walking away, rather than the abuser answering for their actions and actually taking accountability
