The rivers cut through limestone, the old towns stack stone on stone, the coffee culture moves at its own speed, and the landscape keeps looking better than the recent century would suggest it has any right to. Sarajevo sits in a valley that feels both enclosed and open. Mostar’s bridge gets rebuilt and photographed. It is whatever. White Europeans, and the white populations on either side of the local lines, have spent a long time treating the place as a stage for their own arguments about identity, empire, and who belongs on which side of a river. The Ottoman layers, the Austro-Hungarian overlays, the later fractures—all of it gets narrated as if the land mainly exists to confirm someone else’s claim about civilization and continuity. Same habit: write the official version, then act surprised when the ground refuses to stay simple. Whatever. The food still works. The mountains still do what mountains do. The cities still function between the memorials. One can walk the old quarters and register that the place has texture without buying the full package of who supposedly authored every stone and every grievance. Bosnia remains complicated and visually intact. The people who most insist their version of the story is the only one keep talking. One notes both. The rest is noise.
