This is my personal choice, so I don’t want anyone saying Dostoevsky and Monte Cristo are overrated when this is my list because I enjoyed them. The two honorable mentions are for books I appreciate yet don’t have in my top five. Fahrenheit isn’t in my top 10, but it served a purpose early on that I am glad to have read it. To go deeper into some of these books, I read Blood Meridian out of curiosity rather than recommendation. The only difficult prose to adapt to from that book was the punctuation. I’m a pedant for punctuation, and I would’ve corrected Cormac McCarthy too many times that I’d have gone through the story to add quotations and end sentences. I didn’t find the book that dense, but it was shrouded with deep scenes that read like a hypnosis. I read The Odyssey in August 2025. When I said I graduated then read The Odyssey, there was an 11 months difference between reading the book and watching the movie. I thought the movie was good. I don’t critique for actor choice, but I will criticize the exclusion of much of the Polyphemus scenes from the book, and the infamous “Nobody is hurting me” scene. The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of the books I found on my own instead of hearing about it or someone online recommending it. I thought the idea was a good concept, and eventually, two weeks after discovering it, I thought I might read the book. There’s nothing damaging about curiosity, and yet the book satisfies the moral in a picturesque way. I’d like to talk about The Count of Monte Cristo deeper, but I’d prefer if the adventure was left ambiguous to anyone who hasn’t read it. Crime and Punishment is definitely the best book I’ve read. The protagonist was eaten by his conscience and you read how miserable he becomes from the murder to the end. It had me on my edge wondering what his fate would be. I want the comments to be a safe environment for those who want to send feedback. One of my previous posts had a comment who said they love The Count of Monte Cristo and The Bible, but some low life decided to provoke her faith in the Bible, and I thought I must bring attention to it because it’s pathetic to attack people’s faith. I’m not a religious fellow, but I know when I should run my mouth, not harassing people. #reader #BookTok #classicliterature #books #literature
