@var.aunevik: Why does a river have a mouth? Needles have eyes, combs have teeth, bottles have necks? Why do mountains have feet, books have spines, and a cliff a face? Why does a shoe have a tongue, and the earth a heart? Why does the wind whistle, a wave murmur, and the sky smile? The philosopher Giambattista Vico noticed that almost every language describes the non-human world with words for our own bodies and feelings. He wrote that: "When the human mind is lost in ignorance, man makes himself the rule of the universe." It seems that when we can't understand the world, we make it out of ourselves. From the book "The new science" (chapter 11) by Giambattista Vico

The first time I realised what anthropomorphism is when I wandered why we make gods look like human beings .

Ancient humans also did this because they considered themselves part of the natural world. They also used animal terms to positively describe humans. It was and can be connective - a window and not a mirror.

Last week I was thinking about the opposite of the.. Like when a human describes his feelings.. I feel like a mountain setting on my chest.. I am going to explode like a volcano.. Or I am angry like a hurricane.. We also as humen use the universe to describe the tension of our thoughts and feelings..

It’s Anthropomorphism of nature, I studied anthropology and loved this topic .. there are many theories but I can say overall they’re all traced back to our ancestors being animism, almost all cultures started as animism they believed in trees, rain, animals etc like they appreciated the lion bravery and gazelle speed or peacocks beauty while using the human body as a universal tool to measure distance that’s why we still use inch / feet and after evolving into agrarian creatures we moved to measure by hectares and now with technology revolution we measure by giga mega nano etc .. so long story short we are just cute oblivious creatures trying to figure out our environment

Interesting, but what does that say about languages that don't use human adjectives to describe nature? For instance, Arabic has a different word for all these things, not centering the human but rather giving nature its own description
