@te.quila.papi: Chiang Mai looks simple on a map, but a few small things can completely change your trip. Save this before you go 👇 1. The Old City is only ONE part of Chiang Mai. It’s great for temples and walking, but Nimman, the Night Bazaar and riverside are separate areas. Where you stay matters. 2. The airport is basically next to the city. You usually don’t need an expensive private transfer. Chiang Mai Airport has official taxis, Grab and public transport into town. 3. The red trucks aren’t normal taxis. Red songthaews work as shared transportation. Tell the driver your destination before getting in; they may pick up other passengers going the same way. 4. Try to include a weekend. The Sunday Walking Street starts around Tha Phae Gate and completely changes the Old City atmosphere. If markets matter to you, your dates matter too. 5. Doi Suthep is on a mountain, not “inside Chiang Mai.” You need transport to get there, so don’t plan it like another temple you can casually walk to from the Old City. 6. Check air quality, not only the weather. During the dry/smoky season, Chiang Mai can have periods of poor air quality. If you’re planning hikes or viewpoints, check the AQI that day. 7. Nimman is convenient, but check reviews for aircraft noise. It’s close to the airport, and some properties hear planes much more than others. 8. Mountain weather is different. The city can feel warm while Doi Inthanon and higher areas are much cooler, especially early in the morning. Bring a layer. 9. Give Doi Inthanon most of a day. It’s outside the city. If you want waterfalls, viewpoints and nature, don’t squeeze it into two hours. 10. “Elephant sanctuary” doesn’t automatically mean ethical. Research before booking. Riding, performances and forced interactions are red flags even if somewhere uses the word sanctuary. BONUS: Chiang Mai is better when you slow down. Don’t turn it into a checklist of 12 attractions a day.
