@myphotojourney5: Where do the symbols £ and $ come from? The £ symbol goes all the way back to the Romans. The word pound comes from the Latin phrase libra pondo, meaning "a pound by weight". The symbol £ is actually a stylised letter L from libra, which is also why the abbreviation for pounds in weight is lb. The $ symbol has a different story. Before the USA became independent, the American colonies commonly used the Spanish dollar, also known as the piece of eight or peso. The $ sign is believed to have developed from handwritten abbreviations for the Spanish peso. But the word dollar isn't Spanish at all. It comes from the Thaler, a famous silver coin named after the town of Joachimsthal (now Jáchymov in the Czech Republic). Over time, Thaler became Dollar in English. So every time you see £ and $, you're looking at the remains of Roman, Spanish and German history hidden in modern money. #Etymology #LanguageHistory #HistoryTok #EnglishLanguage #WordOrigins #PoundSterling #Dollar #OldEnglish #LearnOnTikTok #DidYouKnow

as a dutch person, one slight adjustment; it's Daalder. not Daler. And a Daalder was 2,5gulden. english "gold/golden" also comes from a dutch word; gulden. the name of our old currency and the name for gold. which in the netherlands later became goud.

Libra is from Romans in fact we in Italy had the £ira(Libbra) also meaning Libra, and the Quid is the equivalent to the 5 Scutum = 20 coins or a calculation 240 credits, then became the 5 Lire of silver and the Scudo 🛡️depicted on the coin and still today in Italy we use the term Scudo for 5 (legacy was 5000 Lire) now it’s 5€uro

And in Greek we caller a fiver (be it 5 drachmas back in the day or nowadays 5 €) a τάλιρο /tá.liɾo/. The story is that the silver coin of 5 drachmas of the newly independent Greek state, had the same size and weight with the Thaler, hence τάλιρο
