Most of the conversations between De Niro and Pesci in Casino were improvised. Scorsese would give them a start and an end, and everything in between was theirs. For this scene, cinematographer Robert Richardson ran two cameras simultaneously just to catch whatever they threw at each other. Pesci was lit with harsh frontal light, De Niro with backlight. Who's attacking and who's absorbing, written in shadow before either of them says a word.
