@author_matthewflagler: “Mark Carney is SELLING Canada’s airports!” 🇨🇦✈️ Well…not exactly. 😂 The federal government is exploring long-term private operating concessions for four of Canada’s biggest airports — Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Calgary and Montréal-Trudeau. But Ottawa says Canada would retain ownership of the airport land and assets. Confused yet? 😂 Here’s the part that often gets lost in the argument: Canada’s major airports already aren’t operated directly by the federal government. Most are run by independent, not-for-profit airport authorities on federally owned land. What’s being proposed now could introduce something different: private, profit-seeking investors — potentially including Canadian pension funds — taking a much larger role in operating some of our most important airports. So is that “selling the airports”? What would actually remain public? What would become private? Where would the investors’ returns come from? Could this unlock billions for Canadian infrastructure — including allowing governments to concentrate resources on regional airports that private investors aren’t lining up to finance? And could passengers ultimately end up paying more? There are legitimate arguments on both sides, and some of the most important details haven’t even been decided yet. So rather than starting with “PRIVATIZATION BAD!” or “PRIVATE INVESTMENT GOOD!”, let’s figure out what Canada is actually proposing. Because ownership, operation, financing and control aren’t necessarily the same thing. And when somebody tells you nothing is really changing?
