@draizident: A woman who delivers by Caesarean section has still given birth. Full stop. Yet somehow, women who have had C-sections are sometimes made to feel like they did not give birth “the real way,” or that they did not give birth “like a Hebrew woman.” But let’s talk about what actually happens during a Caesarean section. A surgeon has to make an incision through multiple layers of the abdominal wall and uterus to safely deliver the baby. Skin. Subcutaneous tissue. Fascial layers. Muscles are separated. The peritoneum is opened. The uterus is opened. The baby is delivered. Then all of these tissues have to be carefully repaired. This is major abdominal surgery. And after all of that, the mother is often expected to immediately switch into “mother mode.” Feed the baby. Breastfeed. Change diapers. Carry the baby. Stay awake through the night. Receive visitors. Smile for pictures. Take care of everyone. Sometimes, people even expect her to be back to normal within days. But her body is healing from major surgery while she is simultaneously recovering from pregnancy, childbirth and the enormous physical and emotional demands of becoming a mother. So please, stop using Caesarean delivery as a measure of how much a woman has “really” given birth. There is no prize for suffering more. There is no special category of motherhood reserved for women who delivered vaginally. And there is nothing less maternal about a woman who needed surgery to bring her baby safely into the world. Whether a baby comes through the vagina or through an incision made by a surgeon, a mother has still carried that pregnancy, gone through labour or surgery, faced the risks of childbirth and brought a new human being into the world. If you know a woman who recently had a C-section, don’t tell her to “be strong” and move on as though nothing happened. Help her. Let her rest. Help her with the baby. Help her get up when she needs to move. And most importantly, remind her that she did give birth. She does not have to prove the validity of her motherhood by how much pain she can endure. A Caesarean section is not the “easy way out.” It is another way a baby is born. #draizident #tallnigeriandoctor
