Its not that serious. I remember Chicka Chicka Boom Boom as the book our second grade teacher read in class after we'd mastered phonics. We love reading books like Brown Bear Brown Bear, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and just call and response fun bedtime books or one chapter out of a book. But practice with the Toddlers Can Read sets and the All About Reading decodables while waiting for bus, having breakfast or right before lunch.

This is why I hate the standard accessible books on the market that states “x book is x reading level” because that is not accurate. It’s more like “x book is for an adult to read to x grade/age of kids”, which is more for auditory comprehension skills. When it comes to actually reading these books as independent reading the trick I use is an add three rule (minimum), so if the book states that it is for first grade the add three rule would put it at an appropriate independent reading book for a fourth grader as the minimum baseline.

Recently bought TCR decodable books for my first grader, and she is slaying them! But now of course I’m being advertised early reader books from other vendors, and they are filled with advanced phonics words they haven’t yet approached in school.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is great to read to kids, it’s repetitive and kids memorize it. They understand words can be read. But you are 100% right, this is not what kids read to you. It is an important part of learning to read, as is any children’s book.

Read Chika Chika Boom Boom to your kids, read ALLLLLLLL the books to your kids. Read them chapter books if you want, but don’t set them up for failure expecting them to learn to read using these books . These are fun books we read to them. Decodable books are books we use to LEARN to read. Skit skat skoodledoot flip flop flee… Like that’s fun for parents to say, extremely challenging for your kiddos tho. Put respect on this man, he’s worked hard for years to teach parents to teach their children to read fast and well.
