It’s so funny that cooking and sewing are considered “women’s work” but fashion designers and chefs are male dominated roles. 🧐

Now take a look at weaving. The jacquard loom created the basis of coding.

my aunt told me about showing up with a bunch of other women during WWII to the sheet metal factory and laughing at how much waste the men had been creating. They saved the company a massive amount of money immediately just with their pattern cutting skills

Sewing is turning 2d fabric into 3d clothing. Knitting and crochet is turning 1d thread into 3d objects.

My son (13) said he wanted to sew targets for archery. I used to sew clothes, but have no idea to make 3D things. The way he figured out how to sew cubes, quivers, and a life-size deer is so impressive to me. He also likes carpentry and made his own working banjo. Thank you for this post!

Agree. You haven't lived until you've fought with a seam at 2am lol

Some will never know the pain of fighting with a bobbin thread the whole project …..and then the needle breaks right before you finish.

When someone ask me if they get into sewing, I ask them ‘how do you feel about flexible curved geometry, order of operations, a high chance of burning or stabbing yourself, and the finality of cutting that fabric you just spent 80$ on and messing up?’ If that seems doable, sure! Sewing is great!

Sewing (especially pattern making) is STEM. You cannot convince it's not.

Something that has always bothered me is that we praise male engineers building buildings as so smart, but we have long ignored the engineering that goes into making clothing and other necessary things from fabric. I mean, the people who could best make Space Suits for NASA were women from Playtex who usually made form fitting and supportive undergarments. No one calls them engineers, but they are.

fiber arts *is* materials engineering. I *love* me some pleating and fabric manipulation! Home Ec sewing classes need to come back. It'd help kids apply like, *all* the math, and then look fly at the end of it

As someone who is currently sewing as I’m watching this (beaded embroidery, but…still): I appreciate this. Sometimes I have to like…sit back and take in what I just did, and go “damn. I just made that”, lol

sewing is engineering. you take 2d patterns and materials and then turn it into 3d things. fabric instead of sheet metal. stitches instead of welding

Started crocheting, quilting, knitting weaving. Then I built this last summer myself and the entire thing is built out of furniture I owned and garage sale finds. All the decor is thrifted!

I pride myself on the fact that I made this dress completely from scratch. I designed and crafted it without any pre designed patterns. I’m also a carpenter so now I’m realizing there’s a reason I like both 😂

I swear to you, I have built bed frames, wall frames, a shed, and a pole bar, and also made Halloween costumes, dresses and a few jackets. The woodwork is heavier. The sewing is harder. I appreciate you man for making me feel seen 😂
