Ranger was being watched by some family members while his most bonded human was out of the area. He was given free reign to investigate a shop area in Carol Stream and he wandered onto a neighbor's property but returned on his own without the family knowing. He was then brought across the street to a friend's house where he was playing with the family and friends off leash. The yard was fenced on two sides but there were gaps in the fence at the back and Ranger found the gap and wandered into a very thick forest area. The family called out and started to search the woods. They did not know, as most people don't know, that when a dog realizes that they are lost, they typically go into a fight or flight state of mind and any calling out can push the dog. Search parties can have the effect of making the dog feel chased and there were a number of busy roads nearby. They contacted SmithicAir and we immediately gave them clear guidance to stop the search party, stop calling out, and to get some scent items laid out with some food and water at the friend's house. We asked them to try to get a camera focusing on the area as well. We explained the difficulty of searching with the many trees in the area as the thermal camera cannot see through solid objects. We also explain that it was very difficult to lure a dog at night as the dogs almost always hear the humans approaching and run. They wanted us to come out anyway and we were on scene very quickly. While searching, we had the family get the word out by filling out a petfbi.org report and they started messaging with a representative from Lost Dogs Illinois. We discussed how to lure a dog using calming signals techniques. We also were alerted to the Ring video of Ranger taken by a neighbor of the shop before the dog was taken to the friend's house. (Thank you for posting it!) After about an hour and 45 minutes of searching, a family member happened to take her eyes off of the monitor and saw Ranger in the same parking lot that we were flying from. Before thinking, the family members exited the car and called out to Ranger. He took off into the darkness. Again, this is very common as family members often forget the advice when they are in close proximity of their lost family member. We focused our search in the area where the dog had run and after a while, we were able to spot Ranger walking along the busy street that separated the shop and the friend's house. At this point, the most bonded family member was racing back to the area. Our plan was to try to keep watch and then attempt a lure with the owner. Ranger crossed the road and investigated the shop area he had been to earlier in the day before wandering down the road again. We used the spotlight on Ranger as a car approached to try to keep him safe. The car stopped and Ranger was spooked. He ran and we lost him in the trees. We were able to reacquire the dog's heat signature again and this time Ranger was in the friend's backyard where he was lost. We watched as Ranger found the scent items and seemed to be looking for his person. Minutes later, that person arrived at the house and sat down on the back deck. She called out to Ranger who immediately started running for the deck and a safe recovery was made. Thank you to the community for keeping an eye out and for keeping Ranger safe. Thank you to Lost Dogs Illinois for sound guidance. #smithicair #lostdog @SmithicAir Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/music/tracks/euchmad/the-simplest-path License code: YCRB16KVN0YJEIQV
