@drjoe_md: One of the hardest parts of working in the emergency department is watching someone walk through the doors talking to you, and then die in front of you hours, or sometimes minutes, later. In emergency medicine, we get very good at compartmentalizing. We have to. There’s always another patient who needs us, another room to walk into, another family depending on us to be calm. But being able to compartmentalize doesn’t mean you don’t feel it. Some cases stay with you. And I think every time you lose someone like that, it takes a little piece of you with them. #EmergencyMedicine #ERDoctor #HealthcareWorkers #Medicine #DoctorLife

My brother was brought into the ER and passed. It was the saddest day of my life. I never thanked the ER staff for their efforts because I was just thinking of my family especially my mother. Her cries are embedded into my soul. Thank you for all you do. [Heartwarming]

I agree the pleading that someone does when there is impending doom is crazy. I have said though the scream you hear when a mother looses a child is something you will never forget.

Also people in the ER that are upset at the wait times never know that the person that has come to treat them may have just watched someone die and now they have to keep going

My mother died Christmas Eve. She was brought into the ER and had had a massive heart attack. The older ER doctor was so affected that he was crying with us. Thank you for all y’all do.

Thank you for this. Retired ER nurse here. Had a most lovely woman come in with her husband while having an asthma attack. Thought we turned it around but she did not make it … still remember that lovely lady years later .. PTSD IS REAL!

My daughter-in-law is an ER nurse, and she switches facilities every so often based on the whether or not there, unit or not in order to help her mental health both of my daughters for CNA’s and my oldest daughter left a critical travel center to go to a smaller hospital because it was just getting to be too much

My heart really hurts for all emergency workers that have to experience such a thing. It’s why while I am a caring and giving person in healthcare is a great career, emotionally. I could never handle it. You must burn out at sometime?
