So this is an interesting one. I'm a litigation specialist for an insurance company, and have been for the past 19 years since college. My gut reaction would also be to deny this claim, because there was no accident or external factor that caused damage to the vehicle. Clearly a sensor or other electrical issue caused the air bags to deploy. Insurance companies don't cover mechanical/electrical issues with vehicles. If any other part of your car malfunctioned, you wouldn't get coverage for it under your insurance policy. If your water pump failed and it caused the engine to overheat and sieze, that wouldn't be covered by the policy. It puts you in a terrible spot, because it sounds like you can't get help from GM either. Definitely check for recalls and service bulletins. Also, it's definitely totalled.

I thought most if not all car companies are required to have a lifetime warranty on airbags/systems. GM will be liable. This clearly is no insurance co issue - it’s GMs responsibility.
