@tisheilajustice: We are often much more comfortable with someone being a survivor than we are with witnessing someone who is still suffering. I use language like “functional but miserable” or “some people are destroyed by trauma” because those are the words people use with me when they finally feel safe enough to tell the truth about how much they are hurting. They are not always looking for a diagnosis or a solution. Sometimes they are trying to communicate the magnitude of something they have spent years minimizing. They have tried saying it softly. They have tried making it easier for everyone else to hear. And sometimes they were still dismissed, avoided, or told to be grateful. So if someone’s language about their pain feels too strong, instead of immediately policing the words, become more sensitive to the suffering underneath them. We can learn to ask, “What are you trying to tell me?” instead of “Why are you talking like that?” We can listen for the pain underneath the language, stay curious, and create enough safety for people to tell the truth before their suffering has to become a crisis to be taken seriously. You do not have to endorse every word someone uses to let them know, “I hear you, and I want to understand.” Disclaimer: This content is for education and reflection only and is not a substitute for mental health treatment. I have been actively trying to heal for years, but it’s almost impossible when your support system can’t handle the inconvenience. My pain is never the most important thing happening and I’m always told in a roundabout way to “try harder to heal faster.”

We live in a society where if your burnt out, tough, still have to show up for work the next day.

I’m severely dissociative and compartmentalized. IYKYK I hid it well from my trauma specialist therapist! I was always praised for having it together and being smart. When my therapist diagnosed me, finally I had answers. It’s been a long process, I had years of just working on regulation so I could actually handle and remember therapy.

My daughter died 18 months ago, and this is still how I feel. I will never be the same again, and I can't make my loved ones understand it

And we say they’re functional very loosely. Even if they seem to have their shit together, it might show up as autoimmune disorders. That pain has to go somewhere.

This is the hardest thing I find that Habesha people can’t understand about their kids or people in their family that they labeled “the black sheep.” They rather see you quietly survive than acknowledge your suffering and expect you to take it with your chin

Damaged beyond repair… take a drinking glass and throw it at a brick wall full force. You could spend the rest of your life trying to put it back together, not only will it never be what it once was, it wont ever hold water again…. That’s the language i use.

This is the nail on the head … no one cared and no one sat with me. It made me look at people differently. When you reach out for help and no one is there in your hard times even when they knew what you went through. Well. How do you get over that? That you’re unlovable after all. That you are too much. Hmm. Anyway. I dont think I’ll look at people in the same way. If I have to be fun to fit in.

I’m exhausted from carrying the trauma, exhausted from the hurt, exhausted from the memories, but trying to deal with it, process it and heal it is also exhausting and you still have the first half of exhaustion while trying to heal. I need a vacation from work and life but I also need a vacation to try and have the space to process and heal. Being on survival mode for 37 years wears you out but you also don’t know how to turn it off.
