How about putting the nut on a few turns and tap it with your hammer. Not all anchor bolts are perfectly 2-1/2” up out of the concrete

I see the pipe method on every job site. I myself carry an 8 inch metal pipe with my concrete gun box in case I need to fix a foundation bolt. The second method I don't do nor do I see much; I use a square. Better to check and be safe than be 1/8th off and then have to run and get another plate.
