@alex_military_money: Hot take: people wildly undervalue the military pension. 👀 Everyone wants to debate whether staying to 20 is worth it, but the conversation gets real different when you actually put a dollar amount on the pension. For us, my husband’s future military pension is worth roughly $2.8 million over his lifetime. We do not count that in our net worth today. But for retirement planning? Oh, it absolutely counts. That guaranteed income becomes the floor, which means everything else we have built gets to sit on top of it instead of doing all the heavy lifting. That is a VERY different retirement picture. 📲 Share this with someone currently doing the “do we really stay to 20?” math. #militarymoney #militaryretirement #militaryfamily #PersonalFinance #militarywife
The only way 20 doesn't make more sense is if you get 100% disability. My goal is to not HAVE to work after 38. Many folks say getting out is better but at 40yrs old they still need a job to survive 🤷♂️. I know quite a few old guys who only work because they want to. Otherwise they bring in over $7k a month just to breath (between disability/pension).

Tricare is also an underrated benefit. Not having your medical benefits tied to your employment is a freedom that most Americans don’t get to enjoy. The flexibility of having a pension plus medical benefits is a game changer.

I am high 3. Between 100% P&T and O5 @ 30 years, I get to choose every aspect of my life at 48. Money isn't everything, but it is directly connected to freedom

I really hope my kid will stick it out for 20. He’d be the 1st in 4 generations of serving if he does. And since the VA hands out disability like candy that will go right along with his pension. He’s E-3 and has only been in 6 months and has his TSP set to 20%. He’s actually keeping it that ”Low” because he’s stacking his HYSA and brokerage. He’s wants accessible cash for his “dream” Supra. I’ve given my opinion but he’s been pretty smart with money. He’s 21 and his investments/cash is sitting over $40k. He also just sold his paid off 2024 Camry to his brother and will receive $500 a month from him. For now he’ll be overseas for 3 years so he has plenty of time and will hopefully keep make some smart decisions

Or do 4 years get out at 22 with 100% VA and free college. Go get a decent career that makes decent money and allows some time off. Then you get to be around your family while everyone is still healthy and you don’t have to miss anything haha.

My husband has 4 1/2 years left. His pension will cover our basic needs and our other investments like rentals, stocks, etc will cover everything else. It’s nice to know if we lost everything, we still have his pension.

Can you do a video on taking the 25 or 50% lump sum at retirement and taking less monthly until 67 vs. taking full pension amount starting at retirement? Seems like taking the lump sum and investing it is smarter if we don't plan to use his pension for living expenses?
