Natalia Granada, 18, Says Watching F1 With Her Parents Sparked Her Racing Dream in Her First F1 Academy Season Natalia Granada says racing has always been a family affair. The 18-year-old Spanish driver spoke with PEOPLE about her first F1 Academy season. As kids, she and her twin brother, Marc, watched Formula 1 races at home with their parents. One day, Marc asked their dad how Fernando Alonso got to Formula 1. “So we started investigating,” Granada said. They learned Alonso started in go-karting. A track was just six minutes from their home in La Garriga, Spain. “I went there and started driving, and from there just one thing led to the next, and here we are,” she said. Granada is one of 15 full-time drivers in the all-women’s series. She is in ninth place in her debut season. She recently finished fourth in Zandvoort, just off the podium. The series now heads to Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas to finish the year. She said the jump from go-karts to single-seaters has been “amazing.” She also credits her team, the Iron Dames, for helping her improve. Life is not easy for the young drivers. Granada balances online school, family, and racing. To take the pressure off, she cooks and spends time with her family. She said she loves making paella and sushi. Her goal is to become the next Iron Dames driver to move beyond the F1 Academy. What did you dream of doing when you were 10 years old? #granada #F1 #Racing #Iron #WomenInSports
