Why This $20 Billion Airport Keeps Sinking. Kansai International Airport was built on artificial islands in Osaka Bay — and engineers knew from the beginning that the ground beneath it would sink. The first island has already settled more than 43 feet. To make construction possible, engineers drove around a million sand columns through the soft clay, giving trapped water a faster way out and forcing decades of settlement to happen in less than a year. But that only solved the shallow problem. Far below the island are much deeper layers of clay that continue to compress under its enormous weight. So instead of trying to stop every inch of settlement, engineers designed the airport to live with it — even building Terminal 1 on hundreds of adjustable columns that can be jacked back into position as the ground moves. This is how engineers built one of the world's most remarkable airports on ground that was never going to stay still. #kansaiairport #kansai #engineering #Construction #airport
