Character home is definitely a phrase in the UK. Mine is 1880s and I call it a character home as a euphemism for ‘the walls and floors aren’t straight and it has damp’. Rather that than a millennial grey new build though!

😬😬😬 I did not clean my house deep enough when I moved in but I can say from experience you don’t want to remove the baseboards. Because you will cry, crash out, and then remove every single one in the entire house, clean everything again, crash out again then put back like i did when i removed mine 🤣🤣

You are beyond beyond. I’ve deep cleaned a couple of resale homes over the years, but nowhere the scale of this. The crud you are dealing with is truly a work of sheer will and determination.

You probably had a coal furnace at some point and it’s coal reside-very common in older homes in the early 1900s

No, I think they’re talking about using the vacuum and the duster blowey thing at the same time so you use the duster Blowey thing to blow the dust out, but the vacuum catches the dust

yeah we ripped most of the walls and ceilings out of our 1930s home before we moved in because we were grossed out by the grime and disturbed by the lack of structural integrity. 😂😅

Some of that gunk behind the wood piece you removed is the mortar and lathe disintegration behind your walls. It's quite possible your mortar binder is even old newspaper, so it could be that too. Or horsehair. They use that as a binding agent too.
