I was talking to a client today who really likes a man who says he is so busy he forgets to respond to her messages. He has a demanding schedule, he works in private equity, so to her it made sense. So she started going to his neighborhood and saying, oh, I'm in the area, and treating her evenings like she has a pager, waiting to be called on. I told her this has to stop. A man does not get into private equity by forgetting things. Men in those careers are excellent at prioritization, because if everything is important then nothing is important, so he can like her and she still isn't a priority, and that is enough information. He also got where he is because he can communicate and get things done, so when he's always forgetting with her, he doesn't care to impress her and he's okay with letting her down. The man who really likes you treats you like a deal he's continuing to close. He might say he has back-to-back meetings all day but he'll call you at seven, and then he calls you at seven. You will never question where you stand with him, and a man like that frees up mental space because you never have to worry whether he's going to deliver. That is just who he is.
