A Comparison of Actors’ Wages (Tokyo), by Toyohara Kunichika, c. 1883, is a Meiji-period Japanese color woodblock triptych that combines kabuki actor portraiture with information about the growing commercial culture of theater. The print depicts eight prominent kabuki actors performing nine different roles, dressed in elaborate costumes and displaying the exaggerated expressions, makeup, and hairstyles associated with their stage characters. Above the portraits is a list of the names and salaries of 56 additional Tokyo-based actors, turning the print into both a celebration of theatrical celebrities and a record of their professional status. By presenting actors alongside information about their earnings, Kunichika highlights the popularity, hierarchy, and economic world of kabuki during the rapidly modernizing Meiji period. - @silk.echo.jp
