Before 1822: The eastern part of Hispaniola was Santo Domingo, a Spanish colony (with a brief period of French and Spanish control and the independent Spanish Republic of Spanish Haiti in 1821). * 1821: José Núñez de Cáceres proclaimed Spanish Haiti (Haití Español) independent from Spain. * 1822: Jean-Pierre Boyer, president of Haiti, entered Santo Domingo and unified the eastern and western parts of Hispaniola under the Haitian government. This ended the short-lived Spanish Haitian government. * 1822–1844: The eastern territory was governed by Haiti. * 1844: Dominican revolutionaries proclaimed the Dominican Republic and established a new independent state. * Therefore, 1844 is conventionally called Dominican independence from Haitian rule, but it is more precise to say that Dominican independence was the creation of a new Dominican state after 22 years of Haitian political control, rather than independence of an already-existing Dominican Republic.
