I’m 1,000% convinced that a lot of these Reddit posts come from couples who inherited $1–2 million overnight. That would explain having substantial wealth while struggling with basic financial math. When you spend years working, controlling expenses, and consistently investing, you tend to know your finances inside and out. An inheritance can put you in the same financial position without the experience of getting there, so suddenly you have the money but no idea what to do next.

Your calculator confuses me a little—if I put retirement age at 53, it says you’re x% of the way to coasting AT 53. Doesn’t it mean I’m x% of the way to being able to coast to retirement at 53?

It’s just a circle jerk of validation lol so disconnected from reality and annoying

they can't, because it's not the number itself but also the lifestyle. a younger couple with multiple young children will need more for future, need more cushion for inflation. if these two are in their 40s, with kids out of college then yes

No, there is more things to think about than that. That’s why they are asking. Kids get more expensive as they get older despite no longer paying for daycare. There are 100 various things that they are looking to account for not just the numbers. She’s so small people mostly.

the problem is a lot of money is in retirement accounts that penalize you if you pull money out before age 59.5

I am on the sub a lot. its a little more complicated than a calculator 😂 you are managing tax burdens and staying under ACA limits for health care subsidies. I never inherited a dime, I never working in Tech. But I have invested for decades.

No but the real issue is anyone who posts these things then gets all these comments about how it is not enough. They all think you need a minimum of 5M to retire

As someone who is approaching coast I get the hesitancy, there are so many things up in the air. With two kids with a lot of life and college ahead of them as well as the X factor of healthcare in the US it’s easy to get caught up in what if

They’re looking for validation. It’s a weird feeling to get there bc you grind and grind and are never really sure how to turn that off

Seems like any investment sub is either complete beginners or people just trying to flex. Add in Reddit “humor” and the whole website becomes insufferable fast.
